Nest #6 - 2024

Banded Bird # 76836 – Female

This female is 6 years old. She was seen in the colony last season, but did not have a nest or lay eggs. She is a first time parent this year.  We hope she has a mature mate that will help her raise the chicks.

Dec 28. Last night was a large snow storm.  No problem for the adults, but chicks need to be kept warm and dry. Not all the chicks in our colony survived. Check out THIS  and THIS nests where the chick or the egg got cold and wet.

The female’s name  is Pumkin and the male is Mario.  The chick has been named Baquette. These names are from Ms Grimm’s  Environmental class at Sunnyside  ES, in Portland OR.

Jan 13, 2025.     Nest Check for the 2024/25   season is over. We have pack our equipment and are leaving  Cape Royds field camp.  This year the chicks were big and healthy. The open ocean was near and there was plenty of food.  Join us next Nov to watch a whole new seto of parents raise their chicks.

Baquette is the one are the far left of the pile of chicks keeping warm. Today it is cold and windy.

Jan 13, 2025

This is our last picture of Baquette as we are leaving the camp.  Baquette will have to find his own way to the ocean in a few weeks, learn how to swim and go find his own food.  We wish him a good life.

A first time parent. The nest is not very robust, but there are lots of neighbors to help fend off the Skuas. We  wish her luck.

Dec 24, 2024

She has 2 chicks

Dec 25, 2024

There is only one chick left in this nest. Perhaps  a Skua took it, or perhaps it moved over to another nest. The female is here guarding the chick.

Dec 26, 2024

Mario has returned with food for this single chick.  The ocean is very close, feeding trips are not taking very long.

Dec 27, 2024

Mario is still here keeping a close watch on this small chick.
