Nest #1 - 2025

Banded Bird # 06661 – Female

This female is 15 years old, and the oldest known-age bird in the Cape Royds colony currently. She is an experienced parent and has successfully raised six chicks with her mate.

The first picture was taken December 22nd, 2025 and the nest log started with one chick and one egg. These birds need names!

Jan 1, 2026

Both parents are at the nest, with the female caring for the chick. It is growing well.

Jan 2, 2026

The male is back. The chick is large enough now to keep itself warm most days, but it is very windy today so the male provides extra warmth and shelter.

Jan 3, 2026

The male is still on the nest. The chick has grown very large, and soon will not fit under him!

jan 4, 2026

The male is still on the nest. Where is the female? Perhaps she is taking longer at sea now that she must collect a lot more food for their growing chick.

Dec 27, 2024

The female is still tending to the nest. The egg can no longer be seen. Perhaps it is behind the chick, or maybe it got kicked out of the nest.

Dec 28, 2024

The female is still here and guarding their chick well. The other birds in the subcolony have much larger chicks. They must have started earlier.

Dec 29, 2024

The male is back from sea and is feeding their chick while the female goes out to find food.

Dec 30, 2024

The male is on the nest. The egg is apparently still in the nest. It is hot today, and both adult and chick are drowsy.

Dec 31, 2025

The female has returned with food for their growing chick. The egg is still in the nest, but it will likely never hatch.

Dec 22, 2024

The male penguin is sitting on the nest. He is keeping one very tiny chick and one egg warm.

Dec 23, 2024

The female is on the nest now, though her mate is nearby. She is caring for their chick while still keeping their egg warm. Penguins take turns on the nest so their chicks stay safe and fed.

Dec 24, 2024

No photos today due to a windstorm.

Dec 25, 2024

The male has returned to the nest. He is guarding the small chick and the egg while the female is away finding food. Sharing the work helps the chick survive.

Dec 26, 2024

The female is back on the nest, watching over the chick and the egg. The egg has not hatched yet. If it doesn’t hatch soon, it probably never will.
