Nest # 2 status and archive, 2007-08

Nest #2. This pair is a close neighbor of nest #1, they are in the same sub-colony close to the pond. The pond is frozen now , but later will be a source of fresh water. The female is 7 years old and wears the band #2543. The male is probably about her age. When we arrived on Nov 17th they did not have an egg yet. First egg was laid on Nov 22, the second on either Nov 24 or 25. The first chick hatch on Dec 26, the second hatched on the 28th. On Dec. 31 one chick was lost. The colony was hit by a large storm, heavy snow and winds took the lives of several chicks. This nest successfully raised one chick. Both parents brought back plenty of food and the nest was well protected by neighbors. Click on any picture to see a larger version.
