An Adelie Penguin walking across the ice. Notice the large toenails which help keep them from slipping. Sometimes Adelie Penguins jump small cracks.
Emperor Penguins (50-80 lbs) and an Adelie Penguin (12-15 lbs). You can see how much larger the Emperors are. Penguins behaving badly. The penguin on the right is stealing rocks from the nest of the bird on the left. The nesting adult will not leave the nest so the thief grabs rocks just out of reach.

It's late Novemeber. Most of the eggs that will be laid this year have been laid. The females have left the males in charge of the nest and eggs, and have left for the open ocean to feed. It's quiet in the colony these days.  On their way home from the ocean, these Adelie Penguins are clean and white and will relieve their mates who have been tending the eggs for several days.

This chick hatched today. Notice how small the wings are.  First meal. The chick is too small to take all the food the parent is feeding it. Some has spilled on the rocks.
