Five week old chicks are too big to be protected by their parents. Their thick downy feathers keep out the wind and snow, but not water. This chick will have to shed these feathers and grow adult plumage before they can go swimming. Barnes Glacier. This is part of a land glacier that has grown out over the ocean. It is about 200 ft high. If part of it were to break off, it would become an iceberg.
Adelie penguins are fast and graceful swimmers. They can swim 7-8 km/hour using a porpoise motion as you see in this picture. Weddell Seal
