Adelie Penguin chicks are eating and growing machines. Hatch weight is around 95 grams. About 50 days later they will be around 3000 grams, 30 times their hatch weight. Penguins do not always live peacefully with each other. Territorial disputes among other issues result in fights. This penguin has suffered some damage, but will probably recover.
Female Adelie penguins lay their eggs between 2 and 3 days apart. This chick is about a week old indicating the egg is not likely to hatch. Either it got cold, was not fertile, or simply did not develop for some reason. All these Adelie Penguins have chicks in their nests, and have their backs to the wind. The chicks are too big to lay down on so the parents maintain this posture.

Skua nest with eggs Sometimes a pair of mated skuas, when they don’t have eggs of their own to guard, will hunt as a team. This Adelie nest in the rocks is a good location. Otherwise, against two skuas, the parent would be almost helpless in keeping the skuas from taking an egg.
