Adelie incubation pouch. This part of the bird has no feathers. The penguin nestles the eggs into this area against its skin to keep them warm. The feathers fold over this patch when the bird is swimming to keep the cold water away from the skin. Breeding pair of Adelie penguins. Both members of the pair take turns sitting on the nest. The egg can not be left for even a moment, exposing it to the cold or Skuas. This pair is about to change positions. The mate on the nest has been incubating the eggs for several days and needs to return to the sea to feed.
Brooding Adelie showing off her eggs. Penguins are banded on their left wing. Banding allows scientists to identify individuals year after year and follow their life cycles.
